Genealogically speaking, poppies have close family ties to plants that hung out with the dinosaurs! Botanists divide poppies into almost 800 species grouped into 42 genera and those are just the wild species! They range in height from less than an inch high to over 20 feet tall.
Smaller than the tip of your thumb or larger than your favorite dinner plate - they come in almost all colors of the rainbow.
Poppies, like many flowers, are threatened by the use of powerful herbicides and modern farming techniques.
The yellow horned-poppy is protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, in the UK.
While the California poppy isn't threatened it is illegal to pick them.
