Wild Lilies

Wild Lillies are found in various habitats around the world.  They are native to temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Eastern Asia, particularly China, Japan, and Korea is a biodiversity hotspot for lilies, with dozens of native species.

Most lilies grow from bulbs, which allow them to store nutrients, and survive extreme temperatures or drought.

Many wild lilies have evolved alongside specific pollinators. Some have long floral tubes suited for hummingbirds or months, while others have adapted to suite the needs of beetles or bees.

Habitat loss such as urbanization, agriculture, or deforestation, have destroyed the natural habitats of many wild lily species, such as the Western Lily, found in the Pacific Northwest, the Carolina Lily, found in the Southeastern U.S, and Lilium polyphyllum, found in the Himalayan regions.

Overharvesting for the ornamental trade has devastated specific wild populations.

Changing weather patterns affect lily flowering times and reduce suitable habitats.

Supporting nurseries that propagate lilies from seed or tissue culture ensures that wild lilies are not exploited.

Generating awareness around threatened species and wildlands through affordable and functional art.
