Desert Rain Storm | Prints

The desert looks empty from a distance, but it's one of the most interconnected places I've ever tried to paint. Javelinas, roadrunners, tortoises, and countless insects and birds all time their lives around water that arrives rarely and all at once, and the storm is the signal they all answer to. I spent a lot of time capturing how clouds build in layers, dense and flat at the base, rounding upward into towering, sculptural shapes that each catch the light differently. That fragile timing is under pressure from a changing climate, invasive grasses that carry wildfire through landscapes saguaros never evolved to survive, and development that fragments the habitat and drains the water these species share.
