Wild Orcas

Wild orcas are the  most abundant in colder waters like Antarctica, Alaska, and Norway but are also found in tropical and subtropical waters. The endangered Southern Resident orcas are found in the eastern North Pacific Ocean.

Southern Resident orcas stay with their families for life. Unlike other subspecies of killer whale, Southern Residents do not eat other marine mammals. They subsist on fish, mostly chinook salmon. Their population was reduced by nearly a third between 1965 and 1975 when nearly 50 members were captured for marine parks.

There are approximately 73 left in the wild. The three primary threats to Southern Resident orcas are lack of food from overfishing and disruption of their food supply, chemical pollution, and physical and acoustic disturbance from vessels.

Generating awareness around threatened species and wildlands through affordable and functional art.
