There's a particular kind of quiet that only exists out on open water; no notifications, no noise, just the rhythm of your paddle and your own breath and possibly the breath of an orca in the distance. If you've been feeling pulled toward the slower pace but but haven't had the time or space to explore that, this trip was built for that.

Join Katherine Homes on a 4-day sea kayaking retreat along cold and clear waters of the San Juan Islands, WA, where you will kayak, sleep under the stars and trees, and paint the days away.

Some of you will arrive knowing no one. Most everyone leaves with a small, tightly-knit group of friends, a new visual language for noticing the world and themselves, and a genuinely calmer nervous system.

Each day blends three things we care about deeply: movement, attention, and stillness. Each day allows for roughly four hours of sea kayaking along the bay's protected waters and about three hours of art instruction, including color theory, watercolor mixing, foundational drawing, and a more intuitive and meditative approach to painting.
The landscape does most of the teaching itself: desert cliffs meeting turquoise water, migrating whales if we're lucky, seabirds most days. It's a reminder that we are all connected, and when we give ourselves the space to reconnect with the wild and listen to its wisdom, we find we've had the answers within us all along.
You'll wake to the sound of sea gulls and otters through the mesh walls instead of an alarm. You'll fall asleep with laughter from your neighbors and possible whale blow holes in the distance. Somewhere in the middle of all the paddling, painting, and company of old and new friends, most discover they've quietly reconnected with themselves, without ever trying to force it.

Day 1 | March 6
Arrive in Loreto & Evening Orientation

Upon arrival in Loreto, take a short cab ride to Hotel Oasis and check into your room. Spend the afternoon exploring the town, wandering the local market, touring the historic Mission in the town center, or simply settling in. That evening, meet your sea kayak guides and Katherine Homes for an orientation dinner at a beautiful local restaurant where you'll get to know the group over authentic Mexican cuisine.

Day 2 | March 7
Sea Kayak, Snorkel, Mindful Art Lessons, Wildlife Viewing

We'll gather on the beach in front of the hotel at sunrise for a group meditation and intention-setting, followed by breakfast on site.

From there, we'll pack our gear for the journey ahead, meet our kayaking guides, and take a 20-minute van ride south of town to our launch site. Guides will run a full safety orientation and basic paddling instruction before we hit the water.

We'll make our first crossing, then stop for our first art lesson, lunch, and some snorkeling. After lunch, back into the kayaks for the paddle to our first campsite.

As evening settles in, we'll paint the pinks and purples of a Baja sunset, get to know one another over hors d'oeuvres, and share a home-cooked Mexican dinner courtesy of our guides. When the chatter quiets down, retreat to your tent and fall asleep under a full blanket of stars.

Day 3 -5 | March 8 - 10

On these days, settle into a rhythm: spectacular sunrises, roughly four hours of paddling with plenty of floating rest stops, and a long, unhurried lunch. That midday break is our window for snorkeling, hiking, swimming, and mindful painting instruction with Katherine.

The Gulf of California doesn't run short of subjects; one day it might be whales, another dolphins, flying manta rays, or birds like the blue-footed booby and osprey. In the evenings, we'll eat well, sip margaritas as the sun drops below the horizon, and on moonless nights, watch the water for bioluminescence and a possible evening paddle before heading to bed.

Day 6 | March 11
Take-Out, Explore Loreto, Farewell Dinner

Our last morning starts slow; coffee or tea in hand and one final sunrise meditation before a last stretch of paddling along the shoreline in search of any remaining marine life to paint. After lunch, we'll break camp and make our way to the take-out site, load up the kayaks, and drive back into Loreto.

Once in town, check into your hotel and enjoy a well-earned hot shower before joining the group for a no-host farewell dinner at a local favorite.
