Founded in 1989, the Center for Biological Diversity is a national nonprofit dedicated to the belief that human welfare is deeply linked to nature and the diversity of wild animals and plants on Earth. Because that diversity has intrinsic value — and its loss impoverishes society — the organization works to secure a future for all species, especially those on the brink of extinction, focusing on protecting the lands, waters, and climate that species need to survive. Based in Tucson, Arizona, with additional offices around the U.S., the Center operates through science, law, and creative media, and counts roughly 1.1 million members and online activists among its supporters.
The Center is especially known for its aggressive legal strategy, filing hundreds of lawsuits to enforce stricter protections under the Endangered Species Act, the Clean Air Act, and other federal environmental laws — often by petitioning to list new species as endangered or threatened, or by pushing agencies to properly enforce protections for species already listed. Its work has expanded over time from a regional focus on the Southwest to global issues, including combating climate change, protecting oceans and urban wildlands, and fighting overgrazing and urban sprawl. The Center also runs public-facing media initiatives, including The Revelator, an editorially independent news outlet covering biodiversity and conservation issues.
At the Center for Biological Diversity, we believe that the welfare of human beings is deeply linked to nature — to the existence in our world of a vast diversity of wild animals and plants. Because diversity has intrinsic value, and because its loss impoverishes society, we work to secure a future for all species, great and small, hovering on the brink of extinction. We do so through science, law and creative media, with a focus on protecting the lands, waters and climate that species need to survive.
