American Basin, high in the San Juan Mountains, is one of Colorado's most celebrated wildflower destinations, bursting each July with columbine, Indian paintbrush, and elephant's head. Lower down, the sagebrush country around the Gunnison Basin blooms more quietly with lupine, mule's ears, and scarlet gilia, anchoring an ecosystem that supports pollinators, elk, and the threatened Gunnison sage-grouse. Both landscapes face real threats: earlier snowmelt is pushing bloom times out of sync with pollinators, while drought, invasive species, development, and trampling add further strain.
In 2024, I was honored to design the poster for the Crested Butte Wildflower Festival, capturing both the bold alpine color of places like American Basin and the subtler beauty of the sagebrush. My hope is that the poster invites people to slow down, look closely, and support the Festival's work protecting these flowers for generations to come.
