Kebler Pass is a high mountain pass in Colorado, sitting between roughly 9,200 and 10,000 feet, and it's home to one of the largest aspen groves in North America. Along with its dense forests, the area teems with wildlife and bursts with wildflowers. As evening falls, the setting sun slips low through the grove, glowing between the pale trunks and lighting the leaves in shades of gold and amber. What makes these aspens especially fascinating is that they aren't really individual trees at all. Each grove is a clonal colony, a single giant organism whose trunks are all linked through one shared root system.

Aspens also play a key ecological role. As a pioneer species, they're often the first trees to recolonize land disturbed by logging or fire, and they help stabilize the soil while supporting the surrounding wildlife. Yet they face serious threats. Climate change is one, and fire suppression is another: without periodic fires to clear the way, conifers gradually move in and outcompete the aspens over time.
